John Anderson

Consultant Urological Surgeon

John andersonJohn Anderson has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon with a special interest in oncology, at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, UK, since 1991. He has a particular interest in the detection and treatment of early prostate cancer and the management of invasive bladder cancer.

He is also the Lead Clinician for Cancer in Urology in Sheffield, and an external assessor on the Peer Review Cancer Accreditation Committee. More recently, he has been an external assessor in a number of cancer networks where services are undergoing centralisation as part of the National Cancer Plan.

Mr Anderson was a founder member, then Secretary and Chairman of the Section of Oncology at the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), and is a member of the Executive Committee of the British Journal of Urology International. He is an elected member of the BAUS Council, and is currently serving as Secretary.

He has written extensively on prostate and bladder cancer, and lectures regularly at national and international meetings.

Duncan McLaren

Consultant Clinical Oncologist

Duncan mclarenDr McLaren is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre specialising in the treatment of GU cancer with radiotherapy and chemotherapy within the SE of Scotland. He provides the Scottish Prostate Brachytherapy Service in conjunction with Glasgow. The Edinburgh brachytherapy team was honoured to win Hospital Doctor Oncology Team of the year in 2005

Dr McLaren was clinical lead for the SE Scotland Cancer Research Network for two years and responsible for setting up the Scottish Cancer Research Network (SCRN) Clinical Trials structure at its inception. He continues to be research active and remains clinical lead for GU trials within the SE Scotland. Dr McLaren is a member of the Prostate and Bladder Cancer NCRN clinical studies groups.

He also has a number of translational research interests, in particular the development of silicon chip based ‘lab on a chip’ devices for in vivo real time measurement, and optimisation of tumour hypoxia during radiotherapy delivery.

Raj Persad

Consultant Urologist

Raj persadRaj Persad is a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Bristol, Lead Clinician for Urology at the United Bristol Healthcare Trust and a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol. He is also Honorary Professor of Medicine at Pittsburgh University, USA, and Chair of the Network Urology Site-Specific Group at Avon, Somerset and Wiltshire Cancer Service. In addition to his university and clinical commitments, he spends time visiting hospital units in the developing world, where he helps to train junior doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Dr Persad is involved in an extensive range of research, including detection of early prostate cancer and novel treatments for prostate cancer. He is Principal Investigator, Chief Investigator and Collaborator in many national and international studies.

He is currently Honorary Secretary of the Section of Oncology at the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), Tutor in Surgical Skills at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Executive Member of the British Prostate Group and a member of the Genito-urinary Group at the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC).

Vicky Mumford

Lead Chemotherapy Nurse

Vicky mumfordVictoria Mumford is the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse at St Luke’s Cancer Centre at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. After training at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire, she developed a passion for cancer nursing, and pursued a career that has involved cancer surgery, outpatient oncology services and chemotherapy day unit management.

Her 11 years in oncology have provided her with the necessary skills to lead chemotherapy service provision for all tumour types, ensuring patient-centred care.

She has a BSc honours degree in cancer care, and is an active member of the Advanced Prostate Cancer Nurse Advisory Board. She is determined that all cancer patients should have access to information and support comparable to that which is currently available to women with breast cancer. She is dedicated to providing this level of equality within her cancer centre through an extensive nurse-led service.

Lawrence Drudge-Coates

Urological Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

Lawrence drudge-coatesLawrence Drudge-Coates is a Uro-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at King’s College Hospital, London, where he is also a part-time Lecturer in Postgraduate Nursing Studies in oncology and advanced clinical assessment. He was part of the Cancer Services Collaborative programme from its inception, initially as a Project Manager, then as Programme Manager.

Mr Drudge-Coates has worked with patients with cancer since he qualified in 1994, and his clinical work now focuses primarily on prostate cancer and bladder cancer. He is a nurse cystoscopist, and he is involved with the entire patient journey in prostate cancer, including specific nurse-led management of bone metastases. His interests include bone health and metastatic bone disease in urological cancers.

He is involved in several nursing advisory boards in urology, and has given presentations at national and international events. His work in both urology and oncology nursing care has been widely published.

Alison Birtle

Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Oncologist

Alison birtleAlison Birtle is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Oncologist at the Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire. Her main interests are the treatment of prostate, bladder and testicular cancers. Her MD thesis was on prostate cancer, and she is passionate about raising awareness of the condition and increasing the funding of research.

Dr Birtle is currently involved in national and international trials of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for urological cancers. She is also involved in work in the development of novel treatments, such as prostate cancer vaccine therapy and use of targeted agents.

She is a regular speaker at prostate cancer support groups, testicular cancer awareness groups, fundraising events and national uro-oncology meetings. She is a member of the National Cancer Research Network Prostate and Bladder Cancer Study Groups and co-chairs national studies of bladder cancer treatment. She is also a member of the British Uro-Oncology Group Executive Committee.
